EIC SCORES HIGH IN THE MIDLANDS
Leading mechanical and electrical services provider, EIC has been awarded its biggest education contract yet. The company’s Midlands regional team has been engaged to carry out a mechanical and electrical contract, valued in excess of £2.2 million, as part of the new build and refurbishment of St Gregory the Great Roman Catholic High School, Oxford.

The new building for the school will include classrooms, a chapel and a sports hall and will be worked on alongside a refurbishment project covering the existing property. The services build programme starts in May 2005 and is expected to run until the end of 2006.

Work is set to include the design and installation of a conventional wet heating system and a gas fired boiler and radiators, along with underfloor heating and tempered fresh air supplies to ceiling mounted grilles. Hot water will be provided by direct fired gas water heaters. The electrical scope of the work includes the design and installation of internal and external lighting, lightning protection, small power, mechanical power, access security, voice and data containment, PA, CCTV and audio induction loops.

Nigel Le Marechal, joint managing director of EIC, comments: “Our work in the education sector has always provided us with a healthy turnover however we’ve witnessed a particularly rapid growth in the last 12 months. Contracts in this sector now account for almost 50% of the revenue accrued in our London regional office and it now looks like the Midlands is set to follow suit. We’re delighted with this latest contract win as it’s the biggest yet in this sector for our Midlands office and it give us the opportunity to work with main contractor, Leadbitter Construction again, with whom we are forming a tight team.”

Mike Burton, Regional Manager (Construction) for Leadbitter adds: “We’re
pleased to join forces with EIC as we’re aware that they have a strong presence in the education build market and that they are now proven specialists in this field. On a project of such size as St Gregory the Great School, it’s important to have a team that is able to pull together and one which is able to demonstrate expertise in this type and size of installation. EIC scores on both these counts.”

Education projects completed by EIC include Crossways Academy, Alexander Park School, Watergate School, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, North East Worcester College, Mayville School Leytonstone, West Wycombe School, Oxford University’s Medical Sciences Teaching Centre and Le Rondin in Guernsey. The company is also currently working on site at the City of London Academy and is due to start contracts in January for Orchard School and Uplands School in Bexley

MPSL GAINS BELLWAY’S APPROVAL
MPSL Planning & Design has recently secured planning permission on behalf of Bellway Homes for 360 units on a site in Overpool, near Ellesmere Port. This approval is the latest in a line of successful planning applications that the innovative division of the MPSL Group has secured for Bellway in recent years.

The development will include a wide mix of properties from apartments, bungalows – as part of an affordable housing scheme for elderly people – and 5-bedroom detached homes. Although mainly residential, the development will also include some leisure facilities as well as a sizeable amount of public open space. MPSL will be progressing relevant details of the build process as part of its ongoing involvement with this development.

The company continues to establish itself in the field of regeneration having also previously been contracted by Bellway to support the design and planning applications of a group of sites throughout Bootle. Bellway is working in conjunction with Sefton Borough Council and County Pallatine Housing Association, part of the Adactus Housing Group, to develop a number of schemes which will seek to enhance the neighbourhoods where they are located including Church Road, Ash Road and Hawthorne Road along with several others. MPSL is also working with Bellway in Crewe, St Helens and Wrexham.

Director of MPSL Planning & Design, Tim Astle comments: “We’re delighted to be supporting Bellway across such a wide range of sites. Our on-going involvement means that we are able to stay close to each project and to see our work take fruit. Playing a part in the construction of environments that are practical and aesthetically pleasing, both to their future occupiers and existing surrounding residents, is extremely rewarding and we’re pleased to be working with a housebuilder that is fully committed to a high level of quality throughout the regeneration process.”

MPSL MAKES ITS MARK IN WALES
Following on from its contract to provide support to Norwest Developments for its housing development in Stockport, North West-based MPSL Ltd will be assisting the independent housebuilder with its latest development – the refurbishment of Bodlondeb Castle Hotel.

Norwest Developments, in partnership with Qube Estates, has purchased the Llandudno hotel and is converting it into a selection of luxury apartments and attractive cottages. MPSL Planning & Design has been contracted to produce working drawings. Sister division, MPSL Civil Engineering will be checking the existing drainage capacity and facilitating any structural changes to the new development.

MPSL’s two divisions combine to provide full service consultancy support to those operating in the construction industry. Planning & Design offers master planning, urban design, architectural services, technical services and landscaping. Civil Engineering works to ensure that the land’s potential is maximised and that there are strong foundations in place for the work to commence. The division undertakes structural engineering, topographical surveys and site investigations, feasibility and cost studies, highways and roads designs and drainage designs.

David Golden, managing director of MPSL Planning & Design, is pleased that
the company is now making a name for itself in Wales: “We have worked hard to transform ourselves from a regional enterprise into a national concern and, thanks to the strong relations we are forging with a wide range of clients, including Norwest Developments, we are now making a mark across the UK.”

Planning manager of Qube Estates, John Seager comments: “The fact that we can access such a wide array of services from one source is a major bonus. It automatically improves communications on a project of this type and promotes a seamless flow of work.”

public sectors. With a dedicated team of architect-led designers and planners and engineers and senior consultants supporting both divisions, the company has quadrupled in size since it was first established three years ago. Clients include Fairclough, Woodfords, Linden, Bellway and David McLean.
