UK towage provider, Adsteam Marine, announced today that it will invest in four new state-of-the-art tugs for 2006, benefiting the ports of Thames and Medway, Felixstowe and Southampton.
Following a recent LNG contract, two new Damen 24/11 tugs are planned for the Thames and Medway. Due to be delivered in January 2006, the tugs will be named Adsteam Harty and Adsteam Warden, after local villages near their new operational base at Sheerness.
Similar to Adsteam’s recent addition on the Humber, Adsteam Ferriby - which was the first 24/11 in Europe - the two tugs each have a 70-tonne bollard pull.
In July, another 24/11 with 70-tonne bollard pull will start its service at Felixstowe. The new Adsteam Shotley will handle the new generation of container vessels due to call at the port from 2006, and will release the Trimley, an ASD with 43-tonne bollard pull, to the Thames and Medway.
In a first, not only for the UK but for Adsteam globally, Southampton will benefit from a new Z tech with 60-tonne bollard pull next September. The innovative Z-Tech design incorporates the best characteristics of both the tractor and ASD tug. This will replace the lower bollard pull tugs and release the Voith tug, Adsteam Surrey to the Thames and Medway fleet. In February 2006, the 53-tonne bollard pull Voith tug Sarah will be also be transferred to Southampton from Thames and Medway.
As a result of this significant investment, the Thames and Medway fleet and the Felixstowe fleet will each benefit from an increase in bollard pull of 15% and Southampton will benefit from an increase of 20%.
Stephen Eastwood, CEO Europe, comments: “These four tugs will prove to be a great asset to our UK operation, increasing the overall power of the UK fleet by 10%. The investment demonstrates our commitment to developing a first-class fleet capable of responding to changes in the market-place and to delivering value to our customers’ businesses.”
