Cutting the Cost of Employee Claims

21 November 2005

As part of the firm's commitment to working smarter, Beachcroft Wansbroughs' Manchester employment team is to trial a computerised case management system to handle claims against employers by employees. Due to be piloted in January 2006, the technology is expected to result in significant cost savings for the firm's clients.

"The case management system will allow us to take a more proactive role in risk management," says Deborah Hely, partner and employment law specialist at Beachcroft Wansbroughs, Manchester. "The technology will allow us to store details of claims more effectively, enhancing our ability to analyse the advice we give on tribunal claims.

"The system will also help us identify trends and training requirements, plus any need to change an organisation's practices and procedures in relation to people development and management. Ultimately, this can enhance the human resources function, increase productivity and reduce legal costs."

Key features of the system include a sophisticated diary system to assist with planning and, a bank of pre-prepared, flexible documents that will help to reduce the time lawyers need to spend on day-to-day tasks.

Data such as a claimant's salary and length of service can be stored and automatically imported into documents, which set out the value of the claim. The system will automatically carry out calculations for loss, resulting in further time savings and reduced costs.

A sophisticated time-recording system will allow Beachcroft Wansbroughs to produce easily digestible data for its clients, so that their legal costs and time commitments can be easily tracked.

"The new system fully supports our quality control and assurance systems and we are confident that the principles can be applied to other risk areas," concludes Deborah Hely.
