A FOND FAREWELL TO H R WANSBROUGH....
As part of a deliberate move towards greater commercialisation and transparency, one of the city's longest-established legal partnerships is moving to LLP status and a brand new corporate identity. Beachcroft Wansbroughs - and its predecessor firms - has been a fixture in the Bristol landscape since 1882, with its Bristol-based population growing exponentially over recent years to its current size of 450 staff housed in two separate office buildings in Victoria Street.
From 1st May 2006, the firm will be saying goodbye to the name Wansbroughs, rebranding as 'Beachcroft LLP' in another clear manifestation of its market-driven philosophy. However, Regional Senior Partner Michael Bothamley is keen to acknowledge the name's proud history before bidding it goodbye.
"The Wansbrough name has been in continuous use in Bristol since 1882," he explained. "H R Wansbrough, who founded the firm, was born in Bristol in 1856 and regularly attended the office until he reached the age of 84 in 1940.
"The last of the Wansbrough family to take an active role in the firm retired at the end of 1963 and the name of the firm (which by then had become Wansbroughs, Robinson, Taylor and Tayler) was simplified to Wansbroughs in 1969."
The modern firm of Beachcroft LLP employs over 1400 people nationally, turns over in excess of £100m and recently announced that it is to occupy new purpose-built offices at Deeley Freed's prestigious Portwall Lane development opposite St Mary Redcliffe church in 2008.
