LAKE DISTRICT - NEW CELEBRITY HAUNT

Although continually popular with holidaymakers and walkers, it seems the Lake District is pulling in the stars. Forget celebrity haunts such as the Italian Lake Como, home to Hollywood actor George Clooney, it seems the new hangout for stars is Lake Windermere.

Rene Zellweger may be the most talked about celebrity in the Lake District, during the filming of ‘Miss Potter’ with co-star Ewan McGregor, but she isn’t alone in visiting the region. Filming such as this has produced a magnificent boost to the regions economy and revenue for local business.

Among the celebrity holiday homeowners to be spotted around Lake Windermere are several premier-league footballers and renowned singer Sting and his wife Trudi Styler. The romantic setting of the Lake District is also said to be the place chosen by Sir Paul McCartney to propose to Heather Mills-McCartney.

John Morphet, managing director of South Lakeland Caravans and owner of the five star flagship holiday park White Cross Bay located on the shores of Lake Windermere, commented: “The fact that this area is attracting celebrities comes as no surprise to me. This is a fantastic place and the unobtrusive nature of the area has seen an increase in the number of stars visiting the region.

“In addition to this, the increased profile of the area as a film location and celebrity visits has ensured an increase in the revenue for local businesses.”

Other A-list celebrities with whom the Lake District is a favoured retreat are Tony Blair and Prince Charles. Friends star Jennifer Aniston and Hollywood actor Brad Pitt were also rumoured to have selected the Lake District as a holiday destination during their marriage.
