TOP ACCOLADE FOR LOCAL LEISURE ENTREPRENEUR

Cumbrian entrepreneur John Morphet has been crowned North West Entrepreneur of the Year by the region's leading business publication, EN Magazine.

John Morphet won the top accolade in front of 450 of the region’s key business figures, at EN's Enterpreneur 2006 awards at Mere Golf & Country Club on Thursday, 18 May.

"John's had an excellent couple of years, which was crowned by the Billing Aquadrome deal," says EN editor Michael Fahy. "This gives his firm, Pure Leisure Group, a platform from which it can push southwards and consolidate its position as the leading independent in its sector. He fully deserves this award. Also, his generosity in donating prizes at his fantastic Royal Westmorland resort for our charity raffle was outstanding and it helped us to raise more than £24,000 on the night for Beechwood Cancer Care."

John Morphet comments: “I was genuinely thrilled to receive this award, in recognition of my achievements over the last few years.  The competition was pretty tough, and that makes it all the more meaningful.  The whole evening was wonderful, and managed to raise a substantial sum for a good cause.”

Earlier this year, John Morphet purchased Northampton leisure park Billing Aquadrome in a multi-million pound deal. Also this year, the business was ranked 76th in the Sunday Times UK ‘Profit Track 100’ listing.

Six years ago the business consisted of a handful of parks - today the business incorporates 14 leisure parks in the UK, a luxury estate in Barbados and a number of other overseas interests.
