Press Release: 1 June 2006

The Leeds employment team at Beachcroft LLP led by three partners, Rachael Heenan, Hilary Larter and Harmajinder Hayre, has become the city's biggest Partner-led employment group and the largest health employment team outside of London, following the appointment of its latest recruit, Daniella McGuigan.

Daniella, who has specialised in employment law for both public and private sectors since 2004, joins the team from Ward Hadaway Solicitors. This appointment, the third in the last six months due to a substantial increase in instructions from new and existing clients, brings the number of lawyers specialising in employment law at Beachcroft's Leeds office to 12. Turnover was up by 25% on the previous financial year and the team are predicting a further 25% increase this year. Given such growth the employment team are now seeking to recruit two additional lawyers.

"This year we've seen a substantial increase in both numbers and fee income from our existing and new public sector clients and new commercial clients," said Rachael Heenan, employment partner. "We've also been building on existing relationships with our long standing health and commercial clients."

Commercial clients that the team undertakes employment work for include Europe's largest office stationery distributor, a national construction company, a leading UK business process outsourcing company, the world's largest express courier company, a household name multi national supermarket chain, a number of leading insurance companies and a major pharmaceutical company.

Long-standing and new health sector clients include NHS Trusts from Yorkshire down to Northampton. The Leeds team also acts for over 50 further health and public sector clients including further education establishments.

"Feedback from our clients tells us that they look for a team that understands their business, can provide no-nonsense common sense advice and has the ability to provide support even within the tightest deadlines. We pride ourselves on meeting these demands and more. Our ability to draw on the expertise of other practice areas within the business means that, in addition to specialist employment knowledge, the Group is not only aware of the employment law aspects of the work but also understands the political context, regulatory framework and public interest issues," explained Heenan.

The Leeds Employment Group, in addition to work for the NHS, is also recognised for advice given to other public sector clients. In particular the Group works closely with the Leeds Projects and Local Government team advising Local Authorities on matters such as TUPE, outsourcing issues, PPPs and PFIs.

The Leeds team forms part of Beachcroft LLP' national employment practice of over 60 lawyers across four locations. Short-listed for 'Employment Team of the Year' in 2005, the national practice has handled over 700 cases within the last 12 months, including the largest single test case in employment tribunal history.
