Press Release: 10 July 2006

The generosity of Bristol businesses has been praised at an event held by Emmaus - an international organisation that offers homeless people a home, work and the chance to rebuild their self-respect in a supportive community environment. President of Emmaus UK, Terry Waite CBE, joined the celebration which gave particular thanks to commercial law firm Beachcroft LLP, and Temple Quay developer Castlemore Securities Ltd. for their continued support, and help in raising over £60,000 within the last three years.

Speaking at the event, Simon Hodson, national senior partner of Beachcroft LLP said: "I strongly believe that businesses have a duty to support the communities in which they operate. Supporting Emmaus was a natural choice for Beachcroft employees, not only because of its tremendous work, but because it's a national organisation with a community in each city where we have an office, ensuring everyone at the firm can get involved in this worthwhile cause."

Terry Waite praised the success of Emmaus Bristol and how local donations have enabled it to support new communities not only in Britain, but across the world; the organisation has recently supported an operation in Mozambique to help persuade child fighters to give up their weapons and lead normal childhoods.

Emmaus is based on the principle of helping to build self-supporting communities who live and work together. . Emmaus Bristol became the tenth Emmaus Community in the UK when Terry Waite opened Shaftesbury House in September 2003. Its strap line is "a bed to sleep in.... and a reason to get out of it". Typical work projects in Bristol involve furniture restoration sold cheaply to formerly homeless people setting up home.
