Commercial law firm Beachcroft LLP is investing in the future of employment law by providing support to BPP’s Law School in Leeds. Beachcroft is not only providing a £100 cash prize to the highest achiever in the employment elective taken by post-graduate legal practice students, but will also provide support by offering placements, speakers and advice. BPP’s Law Division was formed in 1992 and offers training for lawyers at all stages of professional life. The Law School offers postgraduate law training for those intending to qualify as either a Solicitor or a Barrister.
Over the last year, Beachcroft has provided general support in terms of careers talks and careers fairs. Sponsoring the employment elective is the next step forward. Rachael Heenan, employment partner at Beachcroft, explained: “The support we’re providing is not just about giving a cash prize, although that is something for the students to aim for. We wanted to be involved so that we could show students first hand what it’s like working in the legal market, rather than just studying for it.”
Beachcroft will have an advisory role for course queries, and will provide guest speakers when needed. The employment department will also offer work experience for the students. Heenan continued: “Fee earners from a number of departments last year participated in BPP’s ‘Access to Practice’ mentoring scheme. The scheme is designed to put students in touch with the real world, assist with their search for a training contract and to give them a better idea of what to expect in practice. It was such a success, we wanted to extend our involvement this year by sponsoring the employment elective. We want to be able to show students the reality of employment law, and also be there to offer support and advice when needed.”
In the spring term, students choose the potential topic areas they would like to work in. Employment is one of the most popular, with just over 30% choosing it as their main option last year. Hilary Yeo, lecturer and Business liaison manager for BPP’s Law School, said: “Employment law is a developing area - it not only relates to commercial work, everyone is affected by employment regulations. In the past we have had successful students go on to work for Beachcroft in Leeds as paralegals and trainees, so we’re delighted at the commitment and support that Beachcroft is showing for the college and the employment elective in particular.”
