PJ Livesey welcomed year five and six pupils from Norley Primary School to its exclusive Frodsham development, Kingsley Park, earlier this month to demonstrate the range of habitat improvements the company has undertaken to protect local wildlife. The children were invited to view the grounds and buildings and engage in further activities designed to improve and protect the environment.
The children began with a tree-planting ceremony, with two pupils securing a sapling in the earth next to a pond that had recently been dug in the grounds. Classmates planted another sapling in their school grounds later in the day as a symbol of the twinning of the school with PJ Livesey's development. Other interactive habitat-enhancing activities included the building of bird and bat boxes, to coincide with National Bird Box month, to be positioned on the development at a later date.
PJ Livesey has committed itself to a series of positive environmental activities at Kingsley Park. Besides the installation of bat and bird boxes - including barn owl boxes - the company has developed attic space in the original main building for long-eared bats to continue to lodge in. A site of special scientific interest in the middle of the development is semi-acidic grassland and is to be preserved as it houses rare mosses which will then be protected. In addition, piles of branches are being assembled to allow for woodland management and give sanctuary to various wildlife species and fungi.
Planning permission was granted for the Kingsley Park development last year. The original Grade II Listed buildings first opened their doors as a hospital in 1905, having been funded by Sir William Crossley, the owner of a large engineering company in Manchester.
PJ Livesey is working to preserve most of the infrastructure and architecture as the team complete their work on the restoration and redevelopment of the old hospital (also once known as Crossley Hospital East). The transformation of the main hall and nursing home includes a selection of individually designed one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Period outbuildings - including the old pump house and hospital chapel - are being carefully restored to create a number of semi-detached and detached properties within the boundaries of the estate. There will also be a sympathetically designed 4-bedroom detached home in the grounds.

Mindful of the fact that these buildings were originated by an extremely generous benefactor to provide a sanctuary, we believe that it is part of our undertaking to help to preserve the immediate environment and promote its natural development - it is part of the legacy of Kingsley Park."
PJ Livesey also plans to welcome pupils from Kingsley Community Primary School and Manley Village Primary and Nursery School next month to honour its commitment as an environmental educator.
