After over 20 years using contract cleaners, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has decided to bring the cleaning, portering and security services back in-house, in a bid to ensure that these vital services are an integral part of the Trust workforce.
The Trust's Board of Directors, which reviewed four competitive tenders for the contract, considered four factors in reaching their decision: cost, human resources, risk management and quality/customer assurance.
Chief executive Chris Burke said: "The cleanliness of our hospitals is a crucial factor in controlling the spread of infection. We therefore feel it is important that the staff doing this job are an integral part of our ward teams.
"All these staff, including our porters and the security team, make a significant contribution to the quality of the patient experience and we are delighted to bring this group of over 240 staff on to our payroll. Improvements to the skills, quality and morale of this part of the workforce will undoubtedly pay dividends in the quality of services to patients."
The cleaning, portering and security staff who are currently employed by the Trust's present contractor will be transferred to the Trust payroll under employment regulations, when the new contract commences at the start of June.
Dr Burke added: "We have received a very positive response from all the staff involved."
