Education, education, education

Stepping Hill hospital has been awarded Associated Teaching Hospital Status for its commitment to providing top level tuition to undergraduate medical students in the North West.

Associated teaching hospital status means that Stepping Hill has been recognised as providing a high level of education to medical students who come to learn about specific areas of medicine including surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics. The hospital currently offers around 150 placements per year but this is expected to rise sharply from this autumn.  Much of the tuition is practical based learning with students spending time out on the wards taking case histories, talking to patients, attending clinics and shadowing consultants and junior doctors.  This is supported by comprehensive teaching programmes and the continuing commitment of all medical staff and healthcare professionals to educate our next generation of doctors.  Medical students are increasingly returning to train at Stockport throughout their undergraduate years and a high proportion return as foundation doctors.

Medical director for Stepping Hill, Dr James Catania, comments:  “We are delighted to receive this official recognition.  This accreditation recognises the fact that we deliver an extremely high level of teaching and that we work to the standards of main teaching hospitals.”
